War for Ukraine or for Central Banking and Industrial GMO Agriculture?
Wars are never what they seem
In 2014 there was a revolution in Ukraine over then President Yanukovych's refusal to sign a political association and free trade agreement with the EU. This agreement was tied to a $17 billion loan from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, whose terms lifted bans on sale of Ukraine’s agri
cultural land to corporations, as well as GMOs and biotechnologies. Yanukovych had instead decided on aid from Russian worth $15 billion, as well as a discount on Russian natural gas. This decision resulted in a revolution with many violent protests resulting in over 100 dead and his expulsion from office.
Where Ukraine did not allow the use of GMOs in agriculture, Article 404 of the EU Agreement on Agriculture, includes a clause for the use of
“biological or biotechnological culturing, hybridisation or genetic modification of micro-organisms (bacteria, viruses) or human, animal or plant cells”.
Ukraine is known for its rich soil. As the world’s third largest exporter of corn and fifth largest exporter of wheat, their crops have fed much of Europe. This soil was a great opportunity for agribusiness to come in and buy up land to grow their GMO crops, per the loan terms.
The IMF has continued funding Ukraine, most recently in 2021 with conditions to not only strengthen the power of the central bank, but has also finally ended a 20-year moratorium on the sale of farmland to corporations. Ukrainian citizens can only buy up to 100 hectares, while agribusinesses will be able to buy up to 10,000 hectares starting in 2024.
In May 2013 Monsanto announced an investment of $140 million in non-GMO corn seed plant in Ukraine, stated to only use conventional seeds per Ukrainian guidelines. But in Nov 2013, the Ukrainian Grain Association drafted amendments to the law, for "creating, testing, transportation and use of GMOs regarding the legalization of GM seeds."
A WikiLeaks from August 2011 revealed the involvement of the US State Department in this lobbying.
A report from US non-profit Food & Water Watch titled 'Biotech Ambassadors: How the US State Department Promotes the Seed Industry's Global Agenda' was released in 2013 showing that the US State Department has "lobbied foreign governments to adopt pro-agricultural biotechnology policies and laws, operated a rigorous public relations campaign to improve the image of biotechnology, and challenged commonsense biotechnology safeguards and rules - even including opposing laws requiring the labeling of genetically-engineered (GE) foods."
US entities and the EU have supported takeover of Ukraine for biotechnology and Western banking interests, which Russia has refused with its alignment with BRICS and long-standing banning of GMOs.
It’s important to remember that wars, especially in the modern world, are fought by real people for banking and industrial interests. Anyone telling civilians to risk their lives or sending in troops will only be sacrificing for these interests. There usually isn’t an easy answer but keep in mind what’s being fought over before y
